To pay tribute to the memory of Samyeongdang Im Yu-jeong (‘loyalty’) who sacrificed himself to save the nation during Imjinwaeran (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592), a great Neo-Confucian scholar during the Joseon period Kim Jong-jik (‘knowledge and virtue’) and Yoon Dong-ok (‘integrity’) who killed herself to keep her virginal purity, Miryang Arirang Festival is held in early May. During the festival a variety of fascinating events are held such as Goyuje Ritual, Gilnori Performance, Opening Ceremony, Miryang Arirang Singing Contest, Night of Miryang Arirang, Arang Gyusu Beauty Pageant and Performances by Intangible Cultural Property. As the leading local festival of Gyeongsangnam-do, Miryang Arirang Festival has been a great opportunity for citizens’ unity and harmony.
